It's Raining, It's Pouring.

Mia has been very sick. Tim called me at work on Wednesday afternoon and said he was taking her to the ER in Tooele (he was out there doing some work) because she was vomiting what he thought was blood. She'd been throwing up all day and was getting lethargic since she couldn't keep anything down. At the ER, they immediately put an IV in - and she didn't even try to kill anyone. That's how I, as a mother, knew she was really sick. (When we were there on Sunday for the OD on Tylenol, it took 4 adults to hold her down, and I think one of the nurses walked away with a bloody nose. So for her to just lay there and let them poke her with zero casualties - not a good sign.)

After the third bag of fluids, she started to perk up a little bit, so the ER doc came in the room and was ready to release her with just a follow up with her pediatrician the next day when she puked up blood all over the place again. They swabbed it, and it was definitely blood, so they wanted to admit her. I said I wanted her transferred to Primary Children's. They said OK, and were going to let Tim take her there, but Primary's said, "No way! She's coming by ambulance."

Tim rode with her in the ambulance, and I met them at Primary's ER. They got her checked in and did some more poking and prodding, gave her some antacid's and anti-nausea, and finally let her go to sleep around midnight. She slept until seven that morning with little incident.

She felt and looked much better when she woke up, with no more vomiting through the morning, so they released her Thursday afternoon.

Our first thought was that it had something to do with the Tylenol ingestion on Sunday, but it didn't. They think she got a bug, threw up so much with nothing in her tummy that the acid was simply eating away the lining, or that she threw up so hard that she tore the lining of her esophagus.

Either way, she's feeling a little better. She's still extra cranky, won't eat much, and is running a fever off and on, but she's not throwing up anymore, which is good.

We've sure had crazy week, but we're grateful Mia's back home and starting to feel better.

Did you ever think as a parent you would experience the many things that we get to experience? How scary this all sounded to me. How are you holding up? Poor Mia. How is she holding up now?

It is a fact of life, that some children will allow you to become close friends with local ER staff. On one trip to our Orthopedic Surgeons office in Farmington they gave us a grand tour of their expanded and remodelled facility and thanked us personally for providing the funding for their project. Ha-ha. Mia's legacy is just beginning. She'll have her own wing at PCH before you know it!

Katie! You are superwoman! I admire your strength to take on as much as you have. To hear that the life just won't ease up for a minute is heart breaking. Keep your head high...
